Nutrition & Physical Activity Coalition of Salina (NAPA) is formed

The Kansas Health Foundation awards Greater Salina Community Foundation a Nutrition & Physical Initiative grant. Nutrition & Physical Activity Coalition of Salina (NAPA will evolve into LiveWell Saline County) is formed to sustain grant efforts. The coalition is dedicated to improving the physical activity and nutrition of all Saline County residents, as well as providing support for walking/biking trails and worksite wellness activities.

MARCH
Hosts Worksite Wellness Conference

25 organizations attend; initiatives included worksite wellness programs, legal considerations, and motivating employees.

DECEMBER
Supports implementation of CDC Community Health Assessment CHANGE Tool for Saline County

Community Health Improvement Plan is developed by evaluating community-at-large, community institutions, worksites, health care businesses, and schools, as well as by gathering information about physical activity, nutrition, tobacco, chronic disease management, and community leadership.

APRIL
Kansas Health Foundation awards NAPA 4-year $89,000 Healthy Community Initiative (HCI) grant

The grant’s focus is to establish healthy concessions standards with Salina Parks & Recreation for 50% beverages and 25% snacks, in accordance with National Alliance for Nutrition & Activity (NANA) food standards  

Attends the Work Well Kansas Conference

Seven local organizations complete a worksite wellness assessment and learn about potential grant funding through Work Well Kansas.

SUMMER
Taste tests conducted

The community participates in healthy beverage/food taste tests for food sold at Salina Parks & Recs concession stands during the summer.

OCTOBER
Supports Salina Area Local Food Taskforce, winner of the $25,000 USDA Local Foods Promotion Program Grant

180 people learn about the local food system and complete a food systems assessment. Needs identified through the assessment were improving the farmers market (as it was at the time), education for consumers and producers, a food hub model, a food advisory board, and making local foods accessible to all in the community.

NAPA becomes Live Well Saline County

Establishes Facebook page and expanded leadership team. 

AUGUST
Hosts statewide Live Well Healthy Foods Summit

100 people from more than 10 counties learn about food policy councils, food system assessments, farmer’s markets, food hubs, and food policy. The event received coverage in five newspapers including the Salina Journal.

AUGUST
Supports Farmer's Market Promotion Grant recipient, Kitchen 4 Hire

Provides three local farmer’s markets with marketing, market management, and ability to accept SNAP to increase sales and access to local/ regional foods.

JANUARY
Gives presentation at Salina Parks & Recreation Advisory Board

Presentation’s focus is on the healthy concessions initiative, and letter of intent concessionaires will sign to work towards adding healthier options.

MARCH-MAY
Healthy concessions letter of intent signed

Bill Burke, Salina Optimist, and Municipal Golf Course sign letters of intent to work to provide several healthy options, with the ultimate goal of providing 25% of snacks and 50% of beverages that meet the National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity guidelines.

Hosts Coalition Development Workshop

Sixty people from across Kansas learn how to mobilize communities to create lasting change.

JANUARY
Regional Food & Farm Policy Council formed

North Central Regional Planning Commission Board passes a resolution forming the 12-county North Central Kansas Food & Farm Policy Council.

MARCH
Hosts the Eat Right for Life Conference

Eighty-eight people from across Kansas attend this conference featuring keynote speaker, Dr. Ann Kulze, and breakout sessions on local healthy foods topics.

Hosts the Saline County Healthy Foods Conference

Sixty-five people from across the state attend this conference with keynote speaker, Dr. Will Bulsiewicz.

WINTER
Sponsors and markets the Salina Winter Farmer’s Market.

Receives 4-Year $500,000 Pathways to a Healthy Kansas Grant Initiative

Saline County is one of 24 communities in Kansas selected as a Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grantee.

Is recognized for completion of the 4-Year $500,000 Pathways Grant Initiative
